Highs and Lows

Sally woke up on Monday morning with adventure in her eyes. Playa Grande was to be the destination and we were going to walk there. Somehow. Apparently there was a boat that would take us there but we are simple folk and decided to be at one with the crabs instead. After sauntering along the length of Playa Tamarindo in what we hoped was the right direction, we came upon an estuary. This presented a problem. We had heard rumours of crocodiles and there was a boat just sitting there waiting.....we swallowed our pride, handed the guy a dollar each and announced grandly "Playa Grande por favor!". The boat journey lasted all of 30 seconds. Apparently Playa Grande is just the other side of the 10 metre estuary. Never mind, we thought. Playa Grande was sure to contain fun and, most importantly, somewhere to have lunch. A little information we may have found useful before setting off: Playa Grande is as good as it's name -big. Having arrived at about noonish we discovered that there was no shade. At all! Oh yeah, and there's nothing there but big fancy hotels who don't let scruffy travellers such as ourselves sully their pristine appearance. Hungry and desperate for some relief from the baking sun we headed back to Tamarindo. Upon reaching the estuary we grew brave, braver than the crocodiles who I suspect don't actually exist in that particular section of water. With our new found invincibility we waded through the waste high waters, bags above our heads, and emerged feeling triumphant. We were consequently laughed at by the locals who splashed past on an unseen ankle depth path. Hmm....
After eating our body weight in mangos and watermelon we decided to give surfing another try. After Trent and Ron's legendary lesson (me- "What do I do?!" Trent- "Just stand up" *shoves me into a wave*) we felt confident we could make it on our own. Oh how cool we felt as we strolled to the beach with our GIANT foam beginner boards. By this point the sun was going down. I honestly don't think I've even seen so many different colours in the one sky before. Seeing it all from a surf board floating in the Pacific made it all the more special, definately a highlight of the holiday so far.
The next day we took a bus to Montezuma. It was a 5 hour trip and was one of the worst journeys I've ever taken. To say the roads were bumpy is an understatement! We were weaving in and out of pot holes, stopping occasionally to saw up and move fallen trees in the road. By the time we reached Montezuma I was unable to move for fear of throwing up. I had the Spanish phrase for "Stop the bus I need to be sick!" on the tip of my tongue but I suspected that talking would only make things worse. Emily was in a similar state behind me and only Sally 'iron stomach' Deverill emerged from the journey unscathed. We booked into the nearest hostel which turned out to be pretty grotty but by that point we just wanted to go to bed and forget about how awful we were feeling!
But today's a new day and it's amazing what sleep can fix. The first thing we did today was move to a different hostel which is nicer and cheaper too. It's on the beach and has a nice balcony overlooking the sea. After wandering around the town in the morning we decided to do a horseriding trip to the nearby waterfall. We were introduced to our horses and set off along the beach. I've never really ridden a horse before so I was given the dunce of the group. He was prone to stopping randomly and refusing to budge. After a little while I started to suspect my horse had taken a dislike to me and was trying to kill me. He would lead me under low branches and try to head butt me (I'm not paranoid!). However he wasn't a patch on Sally's psycho horse! This fiesty creature would take off at a canter (I think that's horsey speak for running), usually in the wrong direction. Despite all this we had a good giggle and even I managed a bit of cantering (clinging on for dear life of course).
This pretty much brings us up to date. We had fish for dinner. It was nice.

Morning! Did you know that the road to Montezuma is described as the "worst road in Coata Rica" in Wikipedia!!!! It says the true beauty of the place is realised after a lengthy stay - presumeably cuz people can't bear the thought of the return journey! Have looked at the pics online of Playa Tamarindo which shows elegant ladies in wafting sarongs strolling along the empty beach - just like you 3! Never mind the crocs have you seen any turtles yet? Look forward to next exciting installment. Em your letter from Uni came you'll be pleased to know they havn't thrown you out & thanks for the email - Love mum :-) x

steveSounds as if it might be too tough for us so may have to cross it off our list of places to visit on gap year.Sally, job O.K. at Kings Cross so should be able to afford more fish.Remember not to stand between crocodiles and the water. Its safer behind them.
Enjoy

Thank you for your most recent blog episode. We're all looking forward to future contributions. Root ginger, if you can get some, might help the travel/bus sickness. Cut off tiny slices as you need it - you eat it, or just lick it if the taste is too strong. It should keep well in a paper bag. Don't know what ginger is in Spanish, perhaps someone else reading this does...

Keep on bloggin,
mum x

As we are being deprived of 'news' I have decided to share some extracts of emails Sally has sent us direct - just in case any of the parental generation are worried.
"Montezuma,
Don't worry I have so far avoided dehydration and have had no more wet feet
or ladies nights...we are in montezuma at the moment. We had a horrible
journey here and em and jules got pretty ill because it was all dirt tracks
and bumpy etc. I now think that i can travel by any mode and not get travel
sick!? We went for a horseride today... so i'm a little sore now but we saw
some really nice beaches on the way. My horse was a little bit unpredictable
but i came away from the experience unscathed and without falling
off...hooray!
San Jose, 8th JWe are back in san jose tonight and will be travelling to a place called
cahuita on the carribean coast tomorrow. Its got a nice national park
apparently and we just want another laid back place to chill out for a
couple of days. Then I think we are going to cross the border into panama to
go to bocos del toro, an island off the coast. We have to stay in panama for
3 days to be able to come back into costa rica...but i wanted another
passport stamp!
Cahuita, 10th Jul
I like cahuita...although i think the caribbean coast might be a bit too
relaxed for us to achieve anything! But atleast it is nice! We went to the
national park in the morning and then watched the world cup final in a bar.
There are quite a few italians in the area...but also quite a lot of people
supporting the french so it was quite exciting except for the fact that it
went to extra time and penalties so we wasted about an hour more than we had
planned for. In the afternoon we went to playa negra, the black sand beach.
I think i prefer the white beaches though. I have discovered that i don“t
really like crabs much. I saw a spider today but it wasnt that big... thank
goodness i havent seen a tarantula yet! We are leaving here on the 7am bus
tomorrow to cross the border into panama. The island we are going to is
where survivor was set...do you remember that on TV?
BOcas de toro,12th Jul
We are still in bocas del toro but it is
raining today which is rubbish and we are going to leave tomorrow for puerto
veijo. Yesterday we went snorkelling over a reef, saw some dolphins and went
to red frog beach which is home to tiny red frogs. We saw two...they are
only about the size of the end of my little finger!"

So, as you can see they are still busy, too busy for blog writing probably.

Hope this hasn't exceeded the limit!

Get typing girls!

mum... you ruined everything! Emily didn't have time to post her blog even though she wrote it. She is a bout to do it but you have now ruined any element of surprise!
Pah! I'm going to stop emailing you now! We are now are in Pueto viejo and it has been raining all day again :( But tomorrow there is a surf competition on (which despite our pro stats we arent in!) but still it means it must be sunny right?!
